DEBBIE'S
HOME MOVIES
An A&E original
special: "Hollywood Home Movies" provides an
intimate peek into the lives of the celebrities we feel we
already know. From Hollywood's Golden Era to the
paparazzi-infested lives of stars today, we see stars
doing the things we all do - vacationing, having parties,
celebrating holidays, spending family time. But because of
their larger-than-life personas, they seem to do them in a
way that's both more glamorous and more perfect than the
rest of us ever could.
In this special viewers
see legendary stars and their families reminiscing about
their golden days. Viewers also learn about celebrity
shutterbugs - Debbie Reynolds, Tony Curtis, Jeff Bridges,
Walt Disney, Dominick Dunne, Rock Hudson and Glenn Ford -
and how their images preserved that side of Hollywood that
was unscripted, unrehearsed and unstyled. The program is
two hours of Hollywood past and present at rest and play:
the parties, the kids, the hobbies, the pools, the tennis,
the pets, the golf, the behind-the-scenes peeks, and,
finally, the dreaded paparazzi.

SINGIN'
IN THE RAIN. LITERALLY.
Moviegoers watching Singin'
in the Rain outside at a Medford, Oregon, amphitheater
were rained on - by sprinklers that came on - and couldn't
be shut off! A theater manager says the roughly
one-thousand people laughed at the irony of the
situation. But since workers were afraid the
projection equipment would be ruined, they shut off the
film while the sprinklers watered the park. The
screening has been rescheduled for next month and those in
the know explain that a recent power outage threw off
timer clocks for the sprinkler system.

NIA
VARDALOS ON DEBBIE
In an excerpt from an
exclusive interview, The Advocate's Alonso Duralde
asks Nia Vardalos and co-star Alec Mapa
about Debbie's cameo in "Connie and Carla"
. . .
Duralde:
Was
it always slated to be Debbie Reynolds?
Vardalos:
Always Debbie Reynolds. She didn’t believe it herself.
When the producers called her, she thought, All right,
who couldn’t they get? And then they came to me and
they said, “No, she wrote it for you because you had a
dinner theater.” And she believed them and came. I’m
so happy. It was always Debbie Reynolds.
Mapa:
When she showed up on the set, I was waiting for the van.
Vardalos:
Outside by where the trailers were parked, waiting for the
queen to arrive! And then she came and we were all like,
“Oh, my God, she’s so little,” and “Oh, my God,
she’s beautiful.” And she’s great and hilarious -
total pro.
Mapa:
Like, 5 o’clock in the morning, we shot one scene where
she was singing on the piano. Five o’clock in the
morning, and she was sharp and on it. She had a day to
learn the dance number and she got it.
Vardalos:
Yeah. So when she walked on the set, Michael Lembeck
said, “Ladies and gentlemen, Debbie Reynolds,” and the
entire room stood up and gave her a standing ovation.
Mapa:
And it went on and on and on.

LIZ
SMITH'S CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS
Spotted
at the immortal Polo Lounge of the Beverly Hills Hotel - Darva
Conger of "Who Wants to Marry a
Millionaire?" and Playboy "fame," and then
a real star, the living legend Debbie Reynolds. They were
there at the same time, at different tables and miles
apart in every way. Darva, no doubt oblivious to the
history of the place, was almost sitting in the lap of her
male companion, her long messy blonde hair getting in the
way of breakfast. Debbie sailed in head high, back
straight, like the old MGM trouper and survivor she is. In
full glam warpaint, she sat alone and listened intently to
a small jazz band playing '50s-style music. To have been
inside Debbie's head as she remembered gladder times when
brunch at the Polo Lounge really meant something and happy
endings still seemed possible.

FISHER
AND REYNOLDS SELL OFF FAMILY MEMORABILIA
Carrie
Fisher and her mother are offering fans the chance to buy
their family memorabilia. The pair have teamed up with
online auction site Sothebys.com
to sell off items which were clogging up their closets.
Fisher is selling off jewellery given to her by her
ex-husband, music star Paul Simon, including a
pearl necklace and a diamond watch, as well as sought
after Star Wars memorabilia. Her mom is giving away
her wedding ring from her marriage to Eddie Fisher.
She says, "I had the ring for all these years and I
was thinking, 'Why do I have that?' That's just silly.
Someone else will enjoy that." Proceeds from the
auction, which ends on February 7 will benefit Hollywood's
Motion Picture Museum.
